Parenzana railway was a narrow gauge line, 123 km long, passing through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. From Trieste to Poreč (Parenzo). It was opened on April 1., 1902. Parenzana had a major impact and importance to people in Istria, especially for those in the hinterland. Railway line was connecting people and economy, 33 places. Last train operated on August 31., 1935. as Parenzana was not profitable any more due to economic depression and population emigration. Despite beeing very slow it was beloved (it took 7 hours from Trieste to Porec). Both charming and strong in mastering the different acclivities, more than 6oo curves, passing 17 bridges and viaducts and going through many tunnels. At some difficult slopes, passengers were even kindly asked to give a push to the train. Other story says that local children would grease the tracks with figs on purpose.
